Why leaves cannot stay on the lawn

A layer of wet leaves under snow blocks light and traps moisture against the crown of the grass. That is exactly the condition snow mold needs. Come April you are looking at gray matted patches that either take months to fill in or need reseeding.

Leaves in the beds are the same problem with an extra one attached: they rot slowly, hold moisture against shrub stems, and give voles a warm place to spend the winter chewing on your plantings.

One thorough cleanup before the ground freezes prevents both. It is the cheapest lawn repair you will ever buy, because it is the one that stops the damage from happening.

One pass or several
